FLOWERY BRANCH — Michael Silver’s interview with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will air Sunday on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay First (7 a.m.) and NFL GameDay Morning at 9 .m.

Here are some excerpts:

On the quarterback position:

Kyle Shanahan: “I think it’s as hard of a position as there is in sports, to be able to first of all have to make big-time throws. That’s hard enough; there are only a few people in this world who are talented enough to do it. But it’s the part of doing it with these pass rushers. It’s not just intelligence – you have to be able to react. You have to be fearless, you have to be talented and you have to be smart enough to handle all of it too.”

On how important the relationship between quarterback and playcaller is:

Matt Ryan: “I think it’s huge. You can’t be thinking out there when you’re playing the position, so we put in so much time, so much work getting prepared for a game so I can go out there and be on autopilot.”

 On last season:

Shanahan: “I think last year started off great. Starting out 5-0 and having a lot of success on offense and defense. Then we went through a very tough stretch. Being in this league long enough, if you lose two games in a row it’s Armageddon. We lost six.”

Ryan: “That was a hard deal to go through last year for both of us. But I honestly think, I really think we made strides last year and I thought we started playing better football down the stretch. The wins weren’t there but I think we improved and I think that’s really helped us going into this year, and I think we’re a much better for it.”

On the communication between quarterback and playcaller:

Shanahan: “What people don’t realize is that if you mess up one word – either me or him – it can ruin a whole play. Just to spit that out takes a lot of focus.”

On if they have to be thinking alike all the time:

Shanahan: “Yeah definitely. You have to be definitely thinking similar but that’s probably the reason why I can never play quarterback is I think too much. I think he thinks a lot too as the week goes, so it’s about us thinking through things, talking through things but then as you get closer to the game time, he’s off; as he says ‘autopilot.’ He just has to leave the thinking to me to hopefully put him in some good situations where he can just react and play fast.”

On their communication:

Ryan: “One of the things I think has been really good for us is putting in that work and learning each other, and knowing by Saturday afternoon I want to be done with the plan and it’s his job to keep working on it and trying to find the little nuances that are going to make us win.”

The AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter and Noah Coslov chat about Julio Jones’ situation for week 17, Matt Ryan’s MVP candidacy, and why it’s beneficial for the Falcons to host the Saints on Sunday.
